How to Plan a Move to Another City

by | Mar 14, 2019 | Jobs Featured

Approximately a third of Americans would like to move to another city. So, when the time comes to make that move you need to make sure that your move goes smoothly. The good news is that you can have a positive impact on your move if you plan it. You need to consider:

  • What you’re going to take with you
  • Whether you plan to hire a moving company or a truck
  • How long you need to take off work to move
  • and so much more

The sooner you start making plans the sooner you’ll be ready to move. While you don’t have to plan every aspect of your move, making sure you have the main things covered will help.

Let’s take a look at how you can plan a move to another city:

Calculate the Costs

One of the first things you need to do is calculate the potential costs of your move. You need to make sure you have saved enough money so that you can move house and pay for all those necessary bills in the meantime. Consider how much money you’ll need for food, utilities, and living expenses.

If you don’t have a job right now you will need to have enough money to see you through until you get a job.

Start a Timeline

If you have a lot of time before you move home you should consider creating a timeline. This timeline will consist of all of those things you would like to pack and when. For example, you may wish to pack the contents of your bookshelves first as you may not need them until after the move. You may want to think about packing all of those things that you will not need any time soon.

You could also come up with a plan for all of those things that you would like to be moved first. For example, you’ll want your beds to be moved first along with your refrigerator, washing machine and anything else you consider vital.

Consider Giving Away a Few Things

Do you really need to take that bookshelf with you to your new home? Does that old chair that’s seen better days need to come with you? Think about what you want to take to your new home and what you’d like to leave behind. Chances are you won’t want to take everything with you, so have a think about things and give your unwanted items to friends, family, or goodwill charity.

Who is Going to Move you?

Are you considering hiring a moving company or are you happy to do all the work yourself? Please bear in mind that when moving day comes it will be very busy and you’re likely to have a hundred and one things to do. If you can afford to you should hire a moving company to help you. A team of people can move all of your things to your new house while you organize where everything needs to be, say the experts at Atlant Movers form Sacramento.

If you plan to rent a truck you should consider asking a few friends for help. Hiring a truck is usually a lot cheaper than hiring a moving company but it can leave you with a lot to do.

Keep Those Important Items Close By

Keep packing tape, pens, medicines, toiletries, important documents, and anything else you’ll need close by. It would be a shame if you lost your phone charger or you could not find your coffee machine. Keep all of those important items close by, preferably in a box all together so you can grab what you need when you need it. Also, if your old coffee machine is too big and bulky it’s probably time to say goodbye and get yourself a new, portable one instead.

Consider Putting Things into Storage

If you are going to move over a period of days or weeks you may want to put a few things into storage. You may not be able to take everything to your new home right away. Look for storage options in your new city or nearby that you could use for a month or two. You can search for self-storage units in your area on CubeSmart.

Start Packing as Soon as you Can

One of the best things you can do right now is to start packing as soon as you can. While you may not be moving for months the sooner you start the easier it will be for you. Unless you don’t have very many things or you plan to take a few weeks off work to pack things you need to start ASAP. There will be plenty for you to pack so get started this week (if not today) and you’ll find the move a lot less stressful.

Planning your move is important and the sooner you do it the sooner you’ll have everything under control. Consider all of the above options and your move to another city is likely to be a good one.
