Mother’s Day – an international date honouring mother and their influence in the society. US holiday – Mother’s Day has become very popular in several countries around the world. Taking inspiration from the United States, Cynics say its success is mostly commercially driven, with businesses worldwide and thrive on big sales of flowers and gifts. But why is Mother’s Day celebrated on different dates in different countries?

Middle East

Most countries in the Arab world celebrates Mother’s Day on the 21st of March. This date marks the first day of Spring. The celebration first started in Egypt in 1956. This is after Mustafa Amin (an Arab journalist) wrote about it in his book – A Smiling America. However, 10 years later, a woman visited Amin’s brother – Ali where she spoke about the hardships she faced as a single mother. Ali was inspired by the woman’s story.

He decided to bring back his brother’s idea by writing about the importance of recognising mothers and their work. According to local reports, Ali wrote: ‘’ Why don’t we choose a day of the year to be ‘Mother’s Day’ where we celebrate them in our country [Egypt] and other eastern nations’’. The idea gain popularity in the same year – 1956. March 9, Akhbar el-Yom newspaper’s front page acknowledged the date and indicate that it would be celebrated on the 21st of March.

United States

Celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day started in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrews Church in Virginia. Anna’s mother always expressed a desire for the establishment of such a date. After her death, Anna started a movement for the commemoration. In 1910, it was first declared a holiday by the state and other states quickly followed.

The other countries which celebrate Mother’s Day on the second day of May include Venezuela, Brazil, Vietnam, Bhutan, Uruguay, Cuba, Croatia, Canada and Belgium

United Kingdom

On the fourth Sunday of Lent, United Kingdom celebrates ‘Mothering Day’. Lent is a religious celebration in the Christian calendar. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends six weeks after on Holy Saturday. However, the date changes every year as it is linked to Easter. Depending on the Lunar calendar, Easter dates vary. The celebration has evolved in the UK. It has now become a family day and not close to the church.

“Growing up, every time I’d come home from school with a story to share, my mother was there with a snack and a listening ear to hear about what was on my mind. When I came home with a tale about my disastrous second-grade classroom, she marched into the school to figure out what was going on. And as I grew older, including up through my years as First Lady, she was always there for me as a guiding light through whatever fog was clouding my path. She’s always listened more than she lectured; observed more than she demonstrated. In doing so, she allowed me to think for myself and develop my own voice. From an early age, she saw that I had a flame inside me, and she never tempered it. She made sure that I could keep it lit. Mom, thank you for kindling that fire within me, and for your example as a mother and a grandmother to our girls. We would never be who we are today without you. #HappyMothersDay, Mom. Love you. ❤️”
