Celebrate New Year in Chagrin Falls with the Popcorn Ball Drop and Festive Fun
Friday, December 20, 2024
Why spend a fortune watching the iconic Waterford Crystal Ball drop in Times Square when a charming and unique alternative awaits in Northeast Ohio?
For the past 13 years, Chagrin Falls, a picturesque village known for its historical charm and quirky traditions, has hosted its own New Year’s Eve Popcorn Ball Drop. This beloved celebration takes place in the village’s triangle park and centers around Jupiter, a giant popcorn ball with a fascinating history.
“This has become quite a unique annual spectacle and event for this unique village,” said Dewey Forward, owner of The Popcorn Shop. “We now have dozens of volunteers, who call ourselves the Merry Pranksters, working together to launch this fun and wacky new year event.”
Festivities kick off at 10:30 p.m. at Township Hall, where attendees can enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, live music, Hawaiian leis, and glow sticks. Adding to the excitement, 400 smaller popcorn balls will be launched into the crowd during the evening.
The story of Jupiter dates back to 2012 when the original 60-pound edible popcorn ball made national headlines after it was stolen and later returned. Today, a constantly evolving version of Jupiter—designed by Rob Schwind, chief engineer at Chagrin Hardware, and local IT engineer Scott Butler—is prominently displayed in front of The Popcorn Shop leading up to the event.
Entertainment Highlights:
Music by Jimmy Flynn at Township Hall.
Live streaming by Drone Ohio on Facebook, featuring celebrity interviewer Jan Jones.
DJ Bufford T Hedgehog, who will lead singalongs and street dancing.
