Kenya Airways (KQ) has emerged as a sustainability trailblazer, earning top honors at the prestigious 2024 SkyTeam Aviation Challenge held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on January 14-15. Demonstrating its commitment to sustainable innovation, the airline clinched multiple awards, including Best Scaled Catering Solution and Best Approach to Scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Revolutionizing In-Flight Sustainability
In the Best Scaled Catering Solution category, Kenya Airways was celebrated for its innovative efforts to eliminate single-use plastics onboard. The airline introduced traditional African bread baskets and aluminum food containers in economy class, a move poised to eliminate 24 tonnes of plastic waste annually. This bold initiative reflects KQ’s dedication to sustainable travel while embracing African heritage.
Leading the Charge in Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Kenya Airways also secured the Best Approach to Scaling SAF award for its groundbreaking partnership with a local SAF producer. This collaboration aims to establish Kenya’s first SAF production facility, ensuring a steady supply of affordable SAF for Kenya and the broader region. The initiative also promises significant environmental and economic benefits, including job creation in Kwale County and increased tree cover through energy seed plant cultivation on arid and degraded lands.
