Engine selection represents another critical decision for both manufacturers. Airbus is evaluating covered engines with enclosed fan blades versus open-fan designs with exposed blades. British engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is competing for contracts to supply engines for the single-aisle aircraft category, with executives emphasizing that the decision represents a major economic opportunity for the United Kingdom. Company leadership has urged the UK government to provide financial support for the UltraFan engine development program, calling it crucial for advanced manufacturing growth in the country.
