The return of these established players creates selection complications for head coach Andrew McDonald. Boland emerged as a standout performer during the Ashes series, taking 20 wickets as Australia won the series 4-1. Chief selector George Bailey acknowledged Boland’s strong performance, suggesting the quick has made a compelling case for himself among the nation’s premier fast bowlers. The reintegration of Cummins and Hazlewood comes at the expense of Michael Neser, who had contributed 15 wickets during the winter Ashes campaign.
The squad also includes a recall for opener Jake Weatherald, who is competing at age 31. Weatherald has demonstrated strong recent form in county cricket with Leicestershire, accumulating 483 runs at an average of 60.37 in the County Championship. He may open the batting in his hometown if selected for the first Test in Darwin, scheduled to begin on August 13. All-rounder Beau Webster, who plays for Warwickshire as an overseas player, provides additional depth in the middle order. Cameron Green looks to improve his contributions after an inconsistent Ashes series both with the bat and ball.
The Bangladesh series will serve as preparation for Australia’s more demanding three-Test tour of South Africa in October. The second Test against Bangladesh will take place in the Queensland town of Mackay.
