Officials in British Columbia have issued air quality alerts for two regions along the Canada-US border following smoke migration from active wildfires south of the international boundary. The provincial wildfire service identified fires burning across Washington and Oregon as the source of degraded air quality conditions affecting Kootenay Lake and Cranbrook. According to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center, twenty-two large fires are currently burning across both states.
The situation represents a reversal of pollution patterns seen earlier in the week, when smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted into major US cities. That phenomenon prompted political responses from the Trump administration, with the US president stating on social media that the country had been “invaded” by dirty air and suggesting tariff increases on Canada as compensation for pollution costs.
Canadian officials have rejected the characterization of wildfire management failures. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that climate change mitigation represents a shared responsibility across all nations. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for practical assistance rather than criticism, noting that Canada has provided similar support to the United States during fire emergencies. Eleanor Olszewski, Canada’s minister of emergency preparedness, highlighted that the country invested C$12 billion on fire prevention and forest sustainability initiatives over the preceding five years.
Wildfire activity remains widespread across both nations. The Canadian government reported 843 active wildfires burning domestically, with 181 classified as out of control and spreading beyond suppression efforts. An additional 532 fires have been classified as out of control but have not yet received suppressive action. Officials have characterized the cross-border smoke movement as part of a broader regional challenge that transcends national boundaries.
