A significant wildfire broke out late Sunday afternoon in the Fontainebleau forest, located roughly 40 miles southeast of Paris. The fire rapidly spread across approximately 800 hectares of woodland and continued its advance into Monday morning. The blaze’s proximity to the French capital represents an unusual occurrence, as such large-scale fires are uncommon in the region immediately surrounding Paris.
The fire’s emergence caused immediate disruptions to critical transportation infrastructure. The A6 highway, France’s primary north-south route, experienced partial closures. Multiple high-speed rail services were affected, with the SNCF rail company reporting delays of up to eight hours for trains serving Paris’s Gare de Lyon station. Train services began returning to normal by Monday morning. Around 900 homes were evacuated from affected communities, including half the residents of Le Vaudoué village. However, as of Monday morning, no homes had been destroyed and no injuries were reported.
Fire officials characterized the blaze as “very virulent” and of “exceptional scale,” noting that containment efforts could require anywhere from several days to several weeks. Approximately 400 firefighters were deployed to manage the fire. Officials brought in firefighting aircraft from southern France—a first-time occurrence for the Paris region—along with two firefighting helicopters and an observation aircraft to support ground operations.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez indicated that preliminary evidence suggests the fire may have been deliberately set, citing multiple ignition points detected as the fire began. An official investigation was launched to determine the cause. Nuñez noted that France has experienced 32,000 hectares of forest fires by mid-July, already exceeding the total for the entire 2025 season, and that 44 people had been arrested nationwide on suspicion of arson since summer began.
The region continues to experience extreme heat, with the Paris area maintaining the highest heatwave alert status. Experts have linked the intensification of such extreme weather events to climate change impacts.
