Georgia Bulldogs running back Dante Dowdell sustained serious injuries in a recreational vehicle accident during a visit to his home in Picayune, Mississippi, according to coach Kirby Smart’s announcement at SEC Media Days. Dowdell is currently being treated at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a facility that specializes in spinal cord and brain injuries.
Smart indicated that while Dowdell has progressed past the initial critical phase, significant uncertainty remains regarding his full recovery and potential return to competition. The coach declined to provide specifics about the nature of Dowdell’s injuries or establish a definitive timeline for his comeback, noting that his complete return to health and participation this year remains undetermined.
The 6-foot-2, 227-pound tailback joined Georgia this offseason following a transfer from Kentucky, where he posted 112 carries for 560 yards and three touchdowns last season as the Wildcats’ second-leading rusher. He was anticipated to serve as a key contributor to the Bulldogs’ backfield alongside returning starter Nate Frazier. His injury comes amid roster changes that included the departure of Roderick Robinson to the transfer portal and the conclusion of Josh McCray’s eligibility.
Downdell is in his fourth collegiate program, having previously signed with Oregon before transfers to Nebraska and Kentucky. Smart characterized Dowdell as an important acquisition for the program and praised his character, noting that Georgia players have visited him during his recovery and that the organization is providing support to Dowdell and his family.
