Documentary filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe has announced a two-part feature titled “The Fall,” which will investigate the climactic scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 film “Vertigo.” The project was unveiled on July 22 at Fantasia’s Frontières, an international co-production market event held in Montreal through July 25.
The documentary focuses on the film’s famous and ambiguous ending, in which the character Judy falls to her death from a belltower. Rather than showing the fall directly, Hitchcock’s original film presents 57 frames of the main character Scottie’s face as he witnesses the event. Philippe structures his investigation as a noir-style examination of this moment, approaching it not as a puzzle to solve but as a subject to inhabit and explore from multiple perspectives.
The production features interviews with prominent figures in cinema, including director Guillermo del Toro, director Ari Aster, and actress Kim Novak, who famously starred in “Vertigo.” Each interview subject provides what Philippe describes as “a different version of the truth,” with each perspective revealing something personal about the person offering it. Philippe has previously called the “Vertigo” finale Hitchcock’s “biggest mystery.”
The two-part film is produced by Medianoche Productions, the company behind Philippe’s 2025 Venice premiere documentary “Kim Novak’s Vertigo.” Production partners include France’s Tell Me Films and Thunderbug Productions. The project has already secured a pre-sale agreement with France’s Cine+ network. Producers are currently seeking an international sales agent and additional financing partners at Frontières. The filmmakers are planning separate premieres for each part, timed to coincide with “Vertigo’s” 70th anniversary in 2028, with approximately one year remaining in production.
