Groundwater responds slowly to conditions, which provides a buffer during droughts but can result in longer-lasting shortages if they develop.
Climate scientists project that the UK will experience drier summers on average as global temperatures rise, with warmer conditions drawing additional moisture from soil through evaporation. Water infrastructure investment has been identified as critical to managing future shortages. Government and water companies plan to construct nine new reservoirs across England by 2050, while one facility at Havant Thicket in Hampshire is already under construction. The Environment Agency has indicated that additional measures addressing water leaks and demand may be necessary in England.
