Gomes is primarily valued for his defensive contributions and physical presence in midfield. Over three Premier League seasons, he accumulated 380 tackles, exceeding any other player in the competition by 83 tackles. Similarly, no Premier League player has recovered possession more frequently than Gomes during this period. His aggressive approach to winning the ball back proved effective for Wolves, with his interceptions generating expected goals at rates that ranked among the Premier League’s top 10 players last season.
Beyond pure defense, Gomes demonstrates mobility and ground coverage that distinguish him from traditional holding midfielders. He pressed opposing players 1646 times in the previous season, surpassing all Aston Villa players under manager Unai Emery.
