A newly restored 4K edition of “Point Break” will be released in theaters by Resurgence Media Group, Saga Arts and Fathom Entertainment. The theatrical run is scheduled for Aug. 16 and 19. Surfer Matt Archbold, who served as a surf double for Patrick Swayze and helped train the cast members in surfing techniques, will present an exclusive introduction before screenings and discuss stories from the film’s production.
The original film debuted in 1991 and was directed by Kathryn Bigelow. It stars Keanu Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah and Swayze as the charismatic surfer Bodhi. The plot centers on a group of bank robbers known as the Ex-Presidents who wear presidential masks while committing crimes. Utah is sent undercover to infiltrate the surfing community to investigate whether the robbers are surfers. The ensemble cast also includes Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, James LeGros and Anthony Kiedis.
According to Shannah Miller, vice president of marketing at Fathom Entertainment, the restoration aims to satisfy longtime fans by presenting the film’s notable surfing and skydiving sequences on the big screen. Tickets are available through online retailers and participating theater box offices.
In separate entertainment industry news, William Mosely, Poppy Drayton and Ludi Lin have been cast in the film “Hudson & Maria.” The production, developed by Half Crown Media in association with Burns & Co. Entertainment, will begin filming in Malaysia this August. The film tells the true story of Hudson Taylor, an English missionary during the 19th-century Opium Wars who adopts Chinese customs while working in inland China alongside his wife Maria and friend Wang Laijun. Matt Mikalatos is directing and writing the screenplay.
