Keir Starmer's resignation speech in full

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation as leader of the governing Labour Party during a statement to the press. His departure comes roughly two years after the party achieved a landslide electoral victory, ending 14 years of Conservative Party governance.

In his remarks, Starmer reflected on his tenure leading the party and government, noting that he had inherited a Labour Party he characterized as “politically, financially and morally bankrupt” six years prior. He credited his leadership with transforming the party’s reputation and electoral prospects, ultimately securing the majority that many had deemed impossible. He highlighted the party’s efforts to address antisemitism, rebuild economic credibility, and restore national defense and security standing.

During his approximately two years as Prime Minister, Starmer outlined several policy achievements his government had pursued. These included economic growth measures, wage increases outpacing inflation, infrastructure investment, reductions in NHS waiting lists, employment and housing reforms, increased defense spending, and reductions in asylum-related crossings. He also referenced improvements in child poverty metrics and efforts to strengthen Britain’s international relationships and standing.

Starmer stated that while he had successfully led the party’s transformation and its initial period in government, he had determined he was not the best positioned leader to guide the party into the next general election. He indicated that his parliamentary party had communicated this view to him, and he had accepted their position. The Prime Minister confirmed he had notified the King of his decision.

Starmer announced that the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee would establish a timeline for selecting a successor, with nominations opening July 9th and concluding before Parliament’s return in September. He committed to remaining in his post as Prime Minister until the leadership selection process concluded and pledged to support his successor fully. He concluded by acknowledging his family’s role throughout his political career.
