A collection titled Maps of Hope was published in May, the same timeframe as the encyclical’s release. Finkel indicated he held confidence entering the certification process that the pope’s writings would prove human-authored, and Proudly Human determined the collection was human-created within one day.
The certification process requires authors or their representatives to complete identity verification and declare compliance with minimum standards, including prohibitions on using artificial intelligence to write initial drafts or produce sentences and paragraphs. Proudly Human employs multiple AI detection tools that examine different aspects of writing and grammar. Finkel explained the company uses approximately four or five detection tools alongside an averaging algorithm, tested regularly for reliability.
Finkel expressed that people deserve access to information about authorship methods, describing this as a fundamental right. He emphasized particular importance when religious figures communicate sacred wisdom to congregants. Australian Catholic University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Zlato Skrbis, noted the value of confirming written works reflect human reflection and judgment, particularly given the volume of rapidly generated online content.
