By 2200, an additional 1.4 million people could face coastal flood exposure, increasing to 1.7 million by 2300. The study notes that sea levels around the UK have already risen roughly 20 centimeters over the past century and this increase is accelerating. A further 40 to 60 centimeters of rise by 2100 is already inevitable based on current atmospheric conditions, which would place an additional half million people at risk alongside the 2.5 million already vulnerable near coastlines. Lincolnshire and the Humber estuary are identified as regions facing the most significant danger.
Researchers express particular concern about the possibility of rapid ice sheet collapse, which could dramatically accelerate sea level rise. Under such a “reasonable worst-case scenario,” the UK could experience 15 metres of sea level rise by 2300, potentially inundating large sections of London and other populated areas. The study emphasizes that planners focusing only on near-term projections may underestimate actual long-term risks. Lead researcher Matt Palmer described sea level rise as the “sleeping giant” of climate change, explaining that oceans and ice-covered regions respond slowly to warming but continue rising for centuries.
The study represents the first comprehensive quantification of UK population exposure to long-term coastal flooding under various sea level rise scenarios. It combined UK-specific sea level projections with advanced flood modeling from the Bristol-based company Fathom. Experts note that meeting Paris Agreement climate targets could reduce the number of people exposed to flooding in 2300 by approximately 1 million. Scientists and planners stress that adapting to these long-term risks will require a combination of enhanced flood defenses and managed population retreat from vulnerable areas.
