Minnesota state prosecutors announced they received evidence from federal authorities in their investigation into fatal shootings during protests against an immigration enforcement operation. The materials, which had been sought for months, included hard drives containing witness statements, police body camera recordings, and other documentation related to the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Authorities also transferred Good’s vehicle, which was damaged during the incident.
Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was fatally shot in her vehicle while departing an anti-immigration enforcement protest in Minneapolis on January 7. Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, was killed by federal officers during another protest on January 24. Both deaths generated significant national attention and prompted calls for restrictions on immigration enforcement operations.
The transfer of evidence followed months of negotiations between state and federal authorities. Minnesota officials had previously sued the Trump administration for access to investigative materials, contending that state prosecutors possessed jurisdiction over the cases. The breakthrough appeared connected to federal requests for evidence in a related assault case involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. State officials indicated they would share their evidence if the federal government reciprocated, a position they maintained in legal filings.
At least nine people have been killed since the administration’s immigration enforcement campaign began. The Minnesota operation, known as “Operation Metro Surge,” concluded in February after thousands of ICE agents departed the state. No individuals have been charged in connection with the deaths, and federal authorities have suggested state prosecutors lack jurisdiction over cases involving federal officers.
Meanwhile, prosecutors in Texas reported similar difficulties obtaining information from federal authorities regarding a fatal shooting in Houston. Harris County officials said they had not been informed of the identities of the officers involved or their whereabouts nearly a week after the incident. Additionally, an ICE agent shot and killed a motorist in Maine on Monday, according to law enforcement accounts of the incident.
