According to the Refugee Council, a suspension of the UK’s refugee family reunion route initiated in September has prevented approximately 16,300 individuals from applying to bring immediate family members to the country. The suspension, which was initially indicated to last until spring, has not been lifted as of the reporting date. Analysis of Home Office data suggests that among those affected, approximately 9,273 are children and 5,835 are women, comprising roughly 90 percent of those typically approved through this pathway.
The refugee family reunion route previously allowed individuals who had been granted refugee status to sponsor spouses and children under 18 to join them in the UK. The Refugee Council argues the suspension has left separated families in precarious circumstances, with some remaining in conflict zones or turning to unauthorized migration methods to reach safety. The organization contends that alternative safe and legal pathways operated by the government have experienced declining usage, with arrivals falling more than one-third over the past year.
While the government has introduced additional resettlement mechanisms, including a community sponsorship scheme and new study and work routes, these alternatives have accommodated relatively small numbers of individuals. Home Office sources indicated that the decade-long community sponsorship program has brought approximately 1,000 people to the UK, primarily in family units. The government has stated that new routes are expected to initially admit refugees in the low hundreds.
The Refugee Council’s leadership has called for urgent restoration of the family reunion route alongside expansion of new safe pathways. A government spokesperson indicated that planned immigration and asylum reforms would modify family reunion provisions, requiring applicants to meet stricter criteria, and confirmed that new safe and legal routes would begin rolling out in autumn.
