California-based EV charging startup Rangeway is pursuing a differentiated strategy in the public charging market by emphasizing quality and driver experience over simple station proliferation. The company has developed a suite of facility types ranging from sheltered Trailhead stations to fully enclosed lounges and boutique overnight accommodations with off-grid charging capabilities.
Rangeway assembled a technology ecosystem including ChargeMate, WattsUp, Juice Serve, and HyWatts to support its operations across various locations. HyWatts contributes modular Power-Plant-in-a-Box systems that integrate solar generation, battery storage, and hydrogen-ready power modules, enabling charging infrastructure in grid-constrained areas where traditional installations would be impractical. This technology approach mirrors solutions previously deployed by Extreme E racing events in remote locations.
The company recently selected the St. Louis metropolitan area as its initial market focus. Missouri presented an interesting choice given its relatively modest EV adoption rates and a $150 annual registration fee for electric vehicles. However, the state offers several supporting factors, including advocacy from St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson, who championed fleet electrification and EV infrastructure development. Local utility Ameren offers reduced off-peak charging rates, and auto dealers note improving EV sales trends relative to other lower-adoption states.
Rangeway formalized its St. Louis expansion through a joint venture with sustainable building firm LoüTeq announced last month. The partnership positions LoüTeq founder Luke Schuette as Director of Design and Construction, combining Rangeway’s hospitality-driven network model with LoüTeq’s building expertise. This move comes as the company faces competition from the IONNA charging consortium, which launched a comparable lounge-style charging concept in 2024. IONNA, backed by major automakers, recently announced partnerships with Circle K to deploy Rechargeries charging stations at numerous locations, with plans for initial startup later this year and broader expansion in 2027.
