Notion announced plans to discontinue Notion Mail, its email client application accessible through web, desktop, and iOS platforms. The service will cease operations on September 22.
The decision represents the latest chapter in Notion’s acquisition of Skiff, an encrypted email and productivity startup purchased in February 2024. Following that acquisition, Notion discontinued Skiff’s original email service and subsequently launched Notion Mail in April 2025, which was developed by engineers who joined Notion through the Skiff deal. The new shutdown marks the effective end of what remained from the Skiff acquisition’s email operations.
Notion attributed the discontinuation to changing user behavior patterns. According to the company’s statement, more than half of Notion Mail users manage their emails without opening the inbox interface, instead relying on AI agents to handle email workflows. The company indicated it plans to focus development efforts on expanding agent capabilities for email management rather than maintaining a traditional email client.
Users will retain their email history in Gmail, as messages will remain in their original location. However, Notion advised users to export drafts and scheduled emails by September 21, as these items will not automatically transfer to alternative applications. Users can also migrate their Notion Mail configurations, including snippets and auto-labeling instructions. Notion stated that existing AI agents configured for email management will continue functioning, with email connections remaining active within Notion.
Organizations subject to HIPAA regulations must transition away from Notion Mail by June 30, 2026. Prior to the Notion acquisition, Skiff reportedly served 2 million users as an encrypted email provider competing against services like Proton Mail. Notion indicated that knowledge and resources from the Skiff acquisition may continue supporting other productivity features, such as calendar and storage capabilities, as the company competes with services like Google Workspace.
