Raids across UK in crackdown on nuisance car finance texts

The Information Commissioner’s Office conducted coordinated raids across multiple locations in the United Kingdom targeting companies accused of sending spam text messages related to car finance mis-selling compensation. The operation, carried out on Wednesday, focused on five firms based in London, Liverpool, Bolton, Burnley and Swansea, with officials seizing laptops, mobile phones and documents during the enforcement action.

The crackdown comes as complaints about nuisance marketing communications have surged since September 2025. More than 12 million complaints regarding unwanted text messages have been submitted by members of the public, as claims management companies and other businesses attempt to capitalize on the anticipated payouts from a major compensation scheme. These organizations are believed to have sent approximately 170 million texts to consumers between September 2025 and May this year.

The Financial Conduct Authority established a £7.5 billion industry-wide compensation program in March for victims of the car finance scandal, which involved drivers being overcharged on loans due to commission arrangements between lenders and dealers spanning 2007 to 2024. However, legal challenges have resulted in partial suspension of the scheme, with court-ordered pauses delaying expected payouts and complicating the regulatory landscape.

Regulators are coordinating enforcement efforts across multiple agencies, including the FCA, Advertising Standards Authority and Solicitors Regulation Authority. The FCA has removed or amended more than 1,200 misleading advertisements since January 2024. The regulator is also promoting free complaint mechanisms directly to consumers, launching a nationwide advertising campaign running through 6 September to inform the public that professional services are unnecessary for submitting claims.

Investigators emphasized that the enforcement action signals heightened scrutiny of the claims management sector. Companies face potential investigations, fee reductions and other compliance measures for engaging in prohibited practices.
