
Rescue operations were underway in Afghanistan on Tuesday following severe flooding that struck the eastern province of Nuristan the previous day. The disaster claimed at least 23 lives and left more than 100 people missing. Authorities reported that an unknown number of structures were destroyed during the flooding, with significant damage reported in the provincial capital of Parun, where satellite imagery and video footage documented buildings that had been reduced to mud and rubble.
Meteorological forecasters issued warnings that additional extreme weather could impact the region in the near term. The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation’s meteorology department indicated on Monday evening that forecasts called for heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds accompanied by dust storms, and potential flash floods across 10 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.
Afghanistan’s vulnerability to such weather events is compounded by multiple underlying factors. The nation has experienced decades of conflict, which has compromised infrastructure development. Additionally, widespread deforestation, geographic positioning relative to monsoon systems, and the effects of a warming climate all contribute to increased risk during seasonal weather patterns. In areas far from urban centers, dwellings constructed primarily from mud provide minimal protection against sudden floods or heavy precipitation.
This disaster reflects a broader pattern of severe weather affecting South Asia during the current monsoon season. India reported at least 25 flood and landslide deaths across northern and northeastern regions on Monday. Nepal has experienced 27 deaths from monsoon-related flooding, landslides, and lightning strikes since mid-June, with one person reported missing and 69 others injured. Afghanistan faced comparable disasters previously, with more than 300 deaths documented during springtime flooding in 2024 and at least 110 deaths from flooding and landslides earlier this year.
