Russian forces conducted an extensive missile and drone strike campaign against Ukrainian cities, with the capital Kyiv experiencing one of the most significant attacks of the conflict. The assault began in the early morning hours and continued throughout the day, involving approximately 40 Iskander-M and hypersonic Zircon missiles targeting Kyiv alone. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 18 missiles and 108 out of 125 drones deployed in the operation, though substantial damage and casualties still resulted.
The attack caused fires and structural damage across multiple districts of Kyiv, including the historic city center. A three-story building in the Shevchenkivskyi district caught fire, requiring rescue operations. The blast wave from explosions was powerful enough to collapse the ceiling in a metro station vestibule, prompting temporary closure of the facility. At least six people died in Kyiv according to initial reports, with dozens more injured. Additional attacks struck other Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv, where a strike on a postal facility killed three people, and missile strikes on Kherson and Sumy resulted in further casualties.
In a separate incident, Russian cruise missiles struck a Turkish-owned cargo vessel near Odesa that was transporting grain. The attack on the Golden Leo killed six sailors, with four others reported missing and eight rescued. The ship’s international crew included citizens from Syria and India, and a Ukrainian maritime pilot was also killed in the strike.
Ukrainian leadership highlighted the urgent need for increased air defense capabilities, particularly interceptors for ballistic missiles. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that an agreement with Washington regarding licensing for Patriot interceptor production had been reached, with hopes for production to commence by year’s end. The mounting frequency and scale of Russian attacks underscores pressure on foreign partners to accelerate defense supplies.
In response, Ukraine conducted drone strikes against logistics facilities in Russia’s Moscow and Tambov regions, destroying e-commerce warehouses and killing eight people according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks continued amid domestic political tensions in Kyiv following the dismissal of defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov, which sparked public demonstrations. Fighting along the front lines remains largely static as diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict remain stalled.
