Sam Heughan, who starred as Jamie Fraser in the long-running historical drama series Outlander, discussed the evolution of on-set protections for actors during a public conversation with fellow Scottish actor Alan Cumming at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
Heughan indicated that negotiations over nude scenes with production teams were difficult during the show’s early years. He characterized the process as contentious and stated that performers were sometimes required to film such content despite reservations. The 46-year-old actor noted that the introduction of intimacy coordinators in later seasons of the program provided significant safeguards that had been absent when production began in 2014.
Comparingconditions across the show’s run, Heughan described stark differences between the initial years and more recent seasons. In earlier production phases, actors “were very much left to our own devices,” according to his remarks. He highlighted that guidelines and safety measures for intimate scenes have shifted substantially over the program’s 12-year history.
Heughan also discussed his experience portraying a rape scene involving his character, which he identified as among the most challenging work of his career. He explained that filming the extended sequence, which depicted his character being captured, tortured, and assaulted, required multiple days and posed emotional and professional difficulties. While acknowledging the scene’s gravity, he suggested that such narratives, when handled with care and respect, can serve meaningful purposes.
The series concluded this year after eight seasons. A prequel titled Blood Of My Blood launched last year and has been greenlit for a second season slated for later this year. Sony Pictures Television, the production company behind Outlander, was contacted for response to Heughan’s comments.
