The San Sebastián Film Festival has announced its New Directors lineup, a prestigious platform for emerging filmmakers in Europe. The competition features films sourced from Bulgaria, Chile, Germany, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine.
The strand will open with “The Bad Son” (“El mal hijo”), marking the directorial debut of “Money Heist” star Jaime Lorente. The festival will close the New Directors section with “Florid,” the feature debut of BAFTA-nominated British filmmaker Billy Lumby. Lumby’s previous short film, “Samuel 613,” received recognition at the BAFTAs.
Norwegian director Marlene Emilie Lyngstad will compete with “Cute,” which won the top prize at Nordic Talents at Cannes. Lyngstad and her collaborators have previously created works that gained recognition at major film festivals, including a graduation film that won at Cannes La Cinef and received the Next Generation Award at Haugesund.
Additional selections include “Mugalim” from Kazakhstan, produced by Kazakh Cinema and Art East Films, and “Morro,” a Mexican film exploring themes of grief and unexpected connection. The lineup also encompasses works from established production regions alongside emerging film industries. Earlier in July, three Spanish features were announced for the program, including Javier Giner’s exploration of millennial themes and a family drama set against the backdrop of geopolitical events.
The New Directors sidebar showcases diverse international perspectives through 14 feature films representing a range of storytelling approaches and cultural contexts.
