Sagar Pictures Entertainment has announced a strategic pivot toward global expansion, shifting from traditional content production to an intellectual property-focused business model. The Mumbai-based studio confirmed plans to develop franchises and original stories across multiple entertainment formats, including gaming, music, consumer products and theme parks.
The centerpiece of this new strategy is ‘Shrimad Bhagavatam,’ the studio’s inaugural feature film franchise designed as a seven-chapter theatrical saga optimized for premium large-format cinema. The project represents a live-action adaptation of the ‘Bhagavata Mahapurana,’ one of Hinduism’s principal religious texts that explores devotion to Krishna as an incarnation of Vishnu alongside themes of cosmology, genealogy and mythology. The franchise is currently in active production.
According to CEO Akash Sagar Chopra, the studio aims to preserve the authenticity of India’s historical narratives while reimagining them through contemporary filmmaking techniques for international audiences. Chopra stated the company intends to expand stories beyond theatrical releases into interconnected experiences across multiple platforms while maintaining fidelity to the cultural heritage underlying these tales.
Sagar Pictures operates as the film studio division of the Sagar Pix Group, with offices across Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The studio builds on a legacy spanning more than 75 years in entertainment production, having created over 55 television series and more than 25 feature films. Its previous adaptations of Indian epics including ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’ have reached approximately one billion viewers across India, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa region, and diaspora communities globally.
