Slowdown in Arctic ice melt ends after largest winter decline on record

A new study has documented the end of a previously observed slowdown in Arctic sea ice decline, revealing that a temporary pause in melting has given way to accelerated losses. Research published the previous summer had indicated that sea ice extent showed no statistically significant decline between 2005 and 2024, a finding that surprised researchers given rising global temperatures during that period. Scientists attributed this slowdown to natural variations in ocean currents that temporarily offset the effects of warming.

However, a follow-up study has now confirmed that this reprieve was indeed temporary. Using satellite observations of sea ice coverage, researchers found that the slowdown period was not sustained and that Arctic sea ice loss has resumed. The analysis revealed that between 2024 and 2025, Arctic sea ice declined by 5.8 percent, marking the largest year-to-year wintertime reduction ever recorded in the satellite record that began in 1979.

Dr. Duo Chan, lead author of the research from the University of Southampton’s School of Ocean and Earth Science, noted that what initially appeared to be a pause in ice loss in the early part of this decade now appears to represent only a temporary slowdown within a longer-term declining trend. The researchers characterized this renewed decline as physically plausible given current Arctic warming patterns.

The implications of reduced winter sea ice extend beyond the Arctic itself. Winter sea ice functions as an insulator between the relatively warm Arctic Ocean and the much colder atmosphere above it. As ice coverage decreases, more ocean heat and moisture enter the atmosphere, which can alter pressure patterns, influence storm development, and affect large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns that influence weather conditions at lower latitudes.

Chan emphasized that the findings underscore the ongoing nature of the climate crisis, cautioning that short-term recoveries in certain metrics can mask the broader direction of long-term environmental change. The low winter sea ice extents recorded in recent years demonstrate that Arctic sea ice loss continues as the climate warms.
