Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence chatbot users discovered that conversations they had marked as shareable were being indexed and made discoverable through major search engines including Google. The issue came to light when users on Reddit identified more than 200 accessible conversations spanning at least 25 pages of search results. She noted that the Claude interface indicates “anyone with the link” may access shared conversations but acknowledged that the sharing notice does not explicitly warn users that search engines might index these links. The company moved to remove the search indexing of these chats over the weekend, though many had already been saved and distributed online by that time.

OpenAI faced nearly identical issues last year when ChatGPT chat logs became publicly searchable, leading the company to implement changes limiting accessibility. Separately, Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into X and owned by Elon Musk, also saw hundreds of thousands of chat logs made publicly available through online search last year.
Google representatives clarified that the company does not control which pages websites make public, stating that site owners possess clear controls to determine whether pages can be indexed. The process for blocking indexed content must be initiated by website owners themselves. Other search engines including Bing, Brave, and DuckDuckGo, through which Claude conversations also appeared, were contacted for comment on the matter.
