
Millions of shift workers worldwide face a constant battle between job demands and their body’s internal circadian rhythms, resulting in serious health consequences that researchers are only beginning to fully document and understand.
Scientific evidence increasingly demonstrates that disrupted sleep from shift work is associated with numerous health risks. A Swedish study tracking over 13,000 shift workers for up to 41 years found that shift work in mid-life was associated with a 36% higher risk of dementia, with risk increasing the longer individuals worked shifts. Additionally, shift work disrupts melatonin production, a hormone with potential tumor-suppressing properties.
In response to these findings, researchers are investigating whether biphasic sleep—dividing rest into two separate blocks rather than one continuous period—may benefit shift workers. Studies of Arctic Circle shift workers revealed many naturally adopted this two-block pattern. Historical research shows that biphasic sleep was predominant in pre-industrial Western societies until artificial lighting changed sleep patterns in the mid-19th century. Dr. Line Victoria Moen of Norway’s National Institute of Occupational Health is conducting comprehensive research on biphasic sleep patterns among shift workers, with full results expected later this year. Existing studies suggest that napping during shifts, even for 20 to 50 minutes, improves alertness and reduces drowsy driving. Moen’s research aims to develop clinical guidelines helping shift workers understand that split sleep patterns may be beneficial rather than problematic.
