A typical EV battery contains approximately six times the capacity of a residential backup unit, and vehicles with predictable schedules such as school buses and municipal fleets represent particularly valuable resources. Only a fraction of EV owners need to participate for the system to effectively support the grid, though broader participation increases utility flexibility and reduces reliance on individual batteries.

Coordination mechanisms are being refined through early projects, including applications that allow owners to specify typical vehicle usage patterns. The system is designed to send power back during peak demand periods, such as early evening when people return home, with vehicles recharging during later hours. This approach integrates with active managed charging techniques that stagger charging times throughout the evening and morning, preventing simultaneous demand spikes. As hardware costs decline and standards mature, V2G technology is expected to become increasingly accessible.
