
The aviation industry faces significant challenges as jet fuel prices have risen dramatically on international markets following conflict-related disruptions in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz blockade has restricted fuel supplies that historically account for approximately 20% of globally traded jet fuel. Prices increased from $831 per tonne in late February to over $1800 in early April, creating substantial cost pressures for airlines operating in Europe and beyond.
Europe remains particularly vulnerable due to structural supply constraints. The region consumes more jet fuel than it can refine domestically, relying on imports for over half its needs, with more than half typically originating from the Gulf. Only four refineries currently operate in the UK, down from 18 in the 1970s, limiting domestic production capacity. Current reserve levels have declined to approximately 30 days of supply, approaching the 23-day threshold identified as critical by energy agencies. Industry analysts warn of potential physical shortages at select airports if current supply disruptions persist through June.
Airlines have responded with multiple strategies to manage escalating fuel costs. Carriers using fuel hedging agreements have limited exposure for portions of their supply, though some lack complete protection. Others have reduced flight schedules, with major operators announcing significant capacity cuts. Ticket prices have increased substantially on long-haul routes, where some fares have risen 76% year-over-year, while short-haul European flights have seen more modest increases as carriers compete for passenger demand.
Governments and regulators are implementing mitigation measures. UK authorities are allowing airlines greater flexibility in managing airport slots to facilitate schedule adjustments without penalties, while EU rules now classify fuel shortage-related disruptions as exceptional circumstances, exempting airlines from passenger compensation requirements. However, these responses address immediate symptoms rather than underlying structural vulnerabilities. Long-term solutions under consideration include expanding sustainable aviation fuel production domestically, though the industry remains in early development stages with production currently constrained and significantly more expensive than conventional jet fuel.
