The US may be hitting a tipping point for heat pumps

A new report from the Building Decarbonization Coalition indicates that heat pump adoption in the United States is accelerating significantly. Over the past 15 years, sales of these devices have doubled, and in the first quarter of this year, heat pump shipments exceeded those of traditional fossil fuel furnaces by 32 percent. In 2024, nearly half of new housing installations included heat pumps, compared to 47 percent using forced-air furnaces.

Heat pumps operate by extracting warmth from outside air during winter months and reversing the process to provide air conditioning in summer, offering year-round climate control from a single appliance. They achieve this efficiency through superior thermodynamic performance, with a coefficient of performance between 2 and 4, meaning they deliver multiple units of heat output for each unit of energy consumed. This compares favorably to resistance heating methods, which have a coefficient of performance of just one.

New residential construction is a primary driver of heat pump adoption. Three-quarters of new apartments in the United States now use electric heating systems, creating economic incentives for builders to install heat pump technology rather than constructing the infrastructure needed for natural gas delivery. Apartment buildings in particular show growing acceptance, with 18 percent of new multifamily structures in the Northwest featuring heat pumps since 2010, a substantial increase from earlier decades.

Utilities are also exploring advanced applications such as networked geothermal systems, which circulate temperature-controlled liquid through underground pipes to homes and businesses. These systems can be 7 to 8 times more efficient than gas furnaces, since the earth maintains relatively consistent temperatures even during extreme weather. Experts note that deploying these systems requires similar infrastructure skills to those already used for natural gas distribution.

According to industry analysts, the market has now reached a tipping point, with heat pump shipments exceeding fossil fuel furnaces for four consecutive years. This transition supports broader decarbonization goals while potentially reducing overall electricity demand and associated infrastructure costs.
