A major fire near Bordeaux–Mérignac airport in southwestern France claimed the lives of two firefighters, according to statements from French officials. The blaze began as a brush fire in a parking lot area before spreading to a nearby building, prompting the deployment of approximately 100 firefighters and specialist aircraft to contain the flames. Passengers were observed evacuating from aircraft as smoke billowed visibly from the site, leading to delays for numerous scheduled arrivals at the airport.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the fatalities and announced plans to travel to the Gironde department to monitor containment efforts. The fire occurred amid a broader crisis affecting multiple regions of France, as the Gironde department and other areas faced significant wildfire activity linked to extended periods of extreme heat.
On the same day as the airport blaze, another major fire erupted in the southeastern Var department near Pontevès, described by the PSFDF volunteer fire monitoring association as “currently out of control and evolving rapidly.” That incident prompted the deployment of 600 firefighters and rescuers, with 150 residents evacuated from the area.
France has experienced an exceptional fire season, with nearly 11,000 blazes recorded since the start of the year. Data from the European Forest Fire Information System indicates that over 42,000 hectares burned between January and mid-July, surpassing the previous national record established in 2022. President Emmanuel Macron noted that fire frequency has not reached such levels since World War Two.
Experts attribute the surge in wildfires to climate change, which has accelerated warming across Europe at roughly double the global average rate. Elevated temperatures have intensified summer heatwaves, strained water resources, and increased wildfire severity throughout the continent. Spain has experienced particularly severe conditions, with at least 13 fatalities and approximately 29,000 hectares destroyed by a major wildfire north of Madrid.
