Yulia Svyrydenko stepped down from her position as Ukraine’s prime minister on Sunday, with multiple sources indicating she is expected to assume the role of ambassador to the United States under President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The president stated that the transition represents a shift in Ukraine’s political strategy and indicated Svyrydenko would lead efforts in an important area of Ukraine’s relations with a key international partner. Several potential successors were cited by lawmakers, including Serhiy Koretskyi, the head of state energy company Naftogaz; Denys Shmyhal, the current energy minister and former prime minister; and Mykhailo Fedorov, the defence minister.
Zelenskyy also announced that changes would occur in the upper echelons of Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies. The leadership transition follows a period of significant political turbulence, including Ukraine’s largest corruption scandal in the past year that resulted in the resignation of the presidential administration head. In 2025, Zelenskyy had triggered public protests when attempting to reduce the independence of anti-corruption bodies, though he subsequently reversed that decision after sustained opposition.
The timing of the government reshuffle coincides with a recent NATO summit in Ankara, where signs emerged of improved relations between Ukraine and the Trump administration. The US president reportedly pledged to grant Ukraine authorization to manufacture Patriot air defence missiles, marking a notable development in military support.
Meanwhile, military operations continue on multiple fronts. Ukrainian drone operations targeted Russian infrastructure on Monday, including oil facilities and military-related factories. A drone attack in the Moscow region resulted in three deaths and five injuries, according to regional officials. Ukrainian forces also struck oil depots and refineries in multiple Russian regions, with reports of significant damage. In response to sustained drone operations, Russia suspended shipping in the Sea of Azov after approximately 90 vessels were targeted within a week.
