Trade unions representing steelworkers have urged government action to address a significant delay in connecting Tata Steel’s new electric arc furnace to the electricity grid in south Wales. The company disclosed last month that National Grid indicated a potential six- to eight-month postponement, with the timeline potentially extending to a full year due to unforeseen engineering challenges.
Tata Steel is pursuing several strategies to mitigate the delay, including reordering construction phases and potentially installing temporary power infrastructure to allow testing to commence. The facility represents a major industrial transformation for the region, as Tata Steel dismantled its conventional blast furnaces in Port Talbot in September 2024, resulting in 2,000 job losses. The new electric arc furnace, backed by £500m in government support, was anticipated to begin operations by late 2027 and would substantially reduce the UK’s industrial carbon emissions.
National Grid, which operates much of Britain’s electricity infrastructure, cited multiple complicating factors for the delay, including unsuitable ground conditions and outstanding planning and environmental approvals. The electricity company has faced ongoing criticism regarding the substantial backlog of connection projects awaiting completion. Community, Unite, and GMB union officials emphasized the project’s importance for local employment and decarbonization efforts, with Unite’s leadership specifically calling for the national grid infrastructure to be brought under public ownership.
Tata Steel has also confronted additional operational disruptions, including a significant fire that recently damaged a portion of its remaining Port Talbot facility known as the pickle line. The company is exploring reopening an alternative pickle line at Llanwern in south Wales to address this setback. A Tata Steel representative indicated ongoing discussions about adjusting commissioning schedules while highlighting progress on construction milestones. National Grid affirmed its dedication to delivering the connection expeditiously and safely, noting the project’s complexity and regulatory requirements.
