
Trade unions representing steelworkers have urged government action to address delays in Tata Steel’s grid connection for its planned electric arc furnace facility in Port Talbot, south Wales. The Indian conglomerate announced that National Grid warned of a six- to eight-month delay in connecting the new furnace to the electricity network, with potential extension to 12 months due to unforeseen engineering challenges. According to statements from Tata Steel’s chief financial officer, the initial warning from National Grid indicated delays could reach as long as 18 months.
Tata Steel’s blast furnaces in Port Talbot ceased operations in September 2024, resulting in approximately 2,000 redundancies as the company transitioned toward electric arc furnace technology. The government has committed £500 million in subsidies toward the 3-tonne electric arc furnace project, which is intended to substantially reduce the UK’s industrial carbon emissions. The facility was originally scheduled to become operational by late 2027.
National Grid cited multiple obstacles to completing the connection, including problematic ground conditions and complications related to planning and environmental approvals. Both Tata Steel and National Grid indicated they are examining alternatives to expedite the connection timeline, including reordering construction phases and implementing a temporary interim electricity supply to allow testing to commence.
Union representatives from Community, Unite, and GMB expressed concern about the project’s status and stressed the importance of swift resolution. While acknowledging the project’s significance and confirming ongoing collaborative discussions with Tata Steel and government officials, National Grid stated the undertaking involves substantial capital investment and complex engineering requirements subject to regulatory and environmental review processes. The delay compounds existing challenges at the Port Talbot site, where a recent fire damaged the pickle line facility used for surface treatment operations.
