
Health authorities have announced a targeted vaccination initiative aimed at protecting one million teenagers and young adults against meningitis B infections. The program will make the MenB vaccine available to Year 13 pupils and individuals under 25 enrolling in university or residential further education for the first time this autumn, with two free doses offered through the NHS during the summer months.
Meningitis is an infection affecting the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. While the condition can impact people of any age, it occurs most frequently in infants, young children, teenagers, and young adults. The infection may be caused by bacteria or viruses, with bacterial forms being rarer but considerably more serious than viral meningitis. Bacterial meningitis can progress to sepsis or blood poisoning and potentially affect brain function. According to official data, there were 378 cases of invasive meningococcal disease recorded in 2024-2025. Meningitis B accounts for the majority of severe meningococcal disease cases in the UK.
Symptoms of meningitis develop rapidly and may include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, rash that does not fade when pressed with glass, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle and joint pain, sensitivity to light, seizures, and confusion. The MenB vaccine was incorporated into the UK childhood immunization schedule for babies born after 1 July 2015, meaning individuals over age 11 have not routinely received it during standard childhood vaccinations. Research indicates the vaccine may not prevent person-to-person transmission, cover all bacterial strains, or provide long-lasting immunity.
The bacteria can spread through close contact via saliva exchange during coughs, sneezes, and kissing, as well as through sharing drinks or vapes. People may carry the bacteria in their nose or throat without becoming ill while remaining capable of transmitting infection to others. Invasive meningococcal disease typically peaks between October and November annually. University settings and residential accommodations present elevated transmission risk due to population density. Urgent medical attention is advised for individuals displaying meningitis or sepsis symptoms, as early treatment can be lifesaving.
