Exchange-traded funds have historically been associated with passive, index-based investing strategies. However, the industry is experiencing a significant shift toward active management delivered through the ETF wrapper, which offers advantages including intraday trading, tax efficiency, and lower fees compared to traditional mutual funds.
Inflows into actively managed ETFs have accelerated substantially. During the first quarter, investors channeled $245.2 billion into U.S.-listed active ETFs, setting records. The momentum continued with nearly $63.6 billion flowing into these vehicles last month, bringing year-to-date totals to $466.8 billion compared with $263 billion during the comparable period in the prior year.
Several major asset managers are positioning themselves as leaders in this space. BlackRock controlled $3.6 trillion in active assets under management as of June and is integrating active ETFs into its model portfolios as part of long-term growth strategy. JPMorgan Chase operates a robust lineup of active bond and income-focused ETFs, though its ETF business contributes a modest percentage to overall earnings. T. Rowe Price, traditionally a mutual fund provider, is transitioning popular funds into ETF versions while maintaining familiar branding and management teams. Vanguard, historically dominant in passive products, is emerging as a rising competitor in active ETFs. Dimensional Fund Advisors and Fidelity, both private companies, rank among the largest active ETF operators.
The expansion presents challenges for legacy mutual fund issuers lacking active ETF offerings. However, companies like Franklin Templeton have executed successful pivots, with shares appreciating substantially as the market recognizes the value of ETF transitions. Asset managers facing vulnerability can employ strategies including converting existing mutual funds to ETF versions or establishing ETF share classes. Vanguard’s patent on the latter methodology expired in 2023, potentially opening opportunities for competitors.
