
Airbus announced it will conduct trials of folding wing technology for the next generation of its A320 family aircraft, the world’s best-selling commercial planes. The initial testing phase will involve installing four to five metre extensions on an A321neo aircraft in the second half of next year. The first round of trials will focus on the attachment bolts, with the actual hinged folding mechanism to be tested in subsequent phases. Assembly of the wing extension will begin at Airbus’s technology centre in Filton, near Bristol, while the company’s main wing manufacturing takes place in Broughton, north Wales.
Competitor Boeing has already deployed folding wingtips on its larger, twin-aisle 777X model but the technology remains unused on single-aisle narrow-body aircraft, where both manufacturers dominate the market. Airbus expects to finalize the design of its next-generation aircraft by 2030 and is evaluating various fuel-efficiency technologies including new engine designs and hybrid electric systems. The company has indicated that future aircraft will feature larger diameter engines and wings designed with a gull-wing curve for improved aerodynamic performance.
The strategic timing creates an opportunity for engine manufacturers seeking to supply these new aircraft. Rolls-Royce, the British engine maker, is actively competing for contracts with its UltraFan engine programme, developing variants for both wide-body and narrow-body jets. The company’s leadership has appealed to the UK government for investment support, characterizing the decision as a defining opportunity for the nation’s aerospace manufacturing sector over the next five decades.
