Airbus announced plans to test folding wing technology on its bestselling A320 family aircraft as part of broader efforts to design the next generation of commercial planes by 2030. Airbus indicated that initial testing phases will focus on the bolts securing the wing extension rather than the hinges required for the folding mechanism itself. The wing extensions will be assembled at Airbus’s technology center in Filton near Bristol, while wing production continues at the company’s facility in Broughton, Wales. The manufacturer has committed to determining its next-generation aircraft configuration by 2030.

Both Airbus and Boeing are exploring multiple technologies to reduce fuel consumption in their successor aircraft, including new engine designs, hybrid electric systems, and aerodynamic wing configurations. The companies must also select engines for the new generation of planes. Rolls-Royce, a British engine manufacturer, is competing for contracts and urged UK government support for its UltraFan engine program, framing the decision as a pivotal opportunity for advanced manufacturing growth in the country.
