Airbus confirmed that future designs will feature gull-shaped wings for improved aerodynamics and will incorporate large-diameter engines, though the manufacturer has not yet determined whether to use covered engines or exposed open fan designs.
Rolls-Royce, a British engine manufacturer, is competing for contracts to supply engines for these next-generation aircraft. The company’s chief executive indicated a two-year window to secure commitments from Airbus and Boeing for its UltraFan engine programme. He called for UK government support, characterizing the opportunity as the most significant for British economic growth over the next 50 years, though acknowledged the company has alternative manufacturing options available.
