Alaska’s $55B LNG Mega-Project In Talks With More Buyers Ahead Of FID

The Alaska LNG project, a proposed 800-mile pipeline and liquefied natural gas export venture valued at $55 billion, is moving closer to reality as lead developer Glenfarne Group pursues additional buyer commitments. The company has revealed it is in discussions with two more potential customers to secure offtake agreements for approximately 3 million metric tons of LNG. Glenfarne states it needs 80% of its 20-million-ton target capacity covered through binding agreements before proceeding with a final investment decision, having already secured commitments for more than 13 million tons from buyers including Japanese firms Tokyo Gas and JERA.

The project has gained significant political support from the U.S. administration, which has actively encouraged Japan and South Korea to invest in and purchase LNG from the venture as part of broader trade objectives. Senior officials have highlighted the geographic advantages of Alaskan LNG exports, noting that shipping routes across the North Pacific offer substantially shorter distances to Asian markets compared to Middle Eastern suppliers and avoid major maritime chokepoints. The venture structure includes Glenfarne holding a 75% stake with state-backed Alaska Gasline Development Corporation owning the remainder. Greece’s Danaos Corporation has committed $50 million as the preferred shipping provider, pledging to build and operate 6-10 LNG carriers for transport to Asian markets.

The project operates on a two-phase development model. Phase One prioritizes delivering natural gas to Alaska communities and businesses through a 765-mile main pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to the Anchorage region, with an optional secondary lateral pipeline. Phase Two will extend infrastructure to the Kenai Peninsula where a three-train liquefaction terminal capable of producing 20 million tonnes annually will be constructed. Alaska LNG would represent a significant addition to U.S. export capacity, as multiple other projects including Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG, Golden Pass LNG, and several others are under development, potentially adding 14 billion cubic feet daily of capacity through 2029 and effectively doubling current American LNG export capability.
