American Airlines has approved a major fleet modernization initiative that includes the introduction of advanced seatback entertainment screens and expanded premium cabin offerings. The carrier will begin receiving aircraft equipped with 4K displays beginning in 2028, with retrofitting of existing planes to follow. The installation process is expected to conclude during the early 2030s.
The decision to install seatback screens represents a strategic shift for American, which had previously resisted the technology. Company executives had argued that the cost and weight of the equipment did not justify the investment, particularly given passenger preference for personal devices. However, American’s Chief Customer Officer noted that technological improvements and demonstrated customer satisfaction benefits have made the business case stronger. The airline declined to specify the total investment amount but indicated the project represents a significant capital commitment.
As part of the broader cabin enhancement plan, American will increase first-class seating on its Airbus A321neo aircraft and Boeing 737 Max 10s, in addition to adding more extra-legroom seats across its fleet. Premium seating commands substantially higher fares, with first-class tickets sometimes exceeding twice the price of standard coach seats on comparable routes. The airline is also planning to refurbish its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners with new business-class suites and to expand wide-body aircraft capacity.
These improvements align with American’s strategy to narrow profit margins relative to larger competitors. During the most recent quarter, American reported $71 million in profit compared with $805 million for United and $1.6 billion for Delta. Company leadership has identified premium seating expansion, enhanced lounges, and network optimization as key components of the competitive strategy.
