Apple Music to Label AI-Made Tracks Later This Year

Apple Music announced plans to introduce visible labeling for tracks created with artificial intelligence on its platform, with the labels expected to roll out later this year. Record labels and distributors will be required to identify songs where AI comprised a material portion of the creative content. The initiative builds on AI Transparency Tagging that Apple Music introduced in March, which tracks whether a song used AI technology in its creation systems.

The tech company framed content providers as essential partners in the effort, noting that labels and distributors are best positioned to disclose how their music was created and which AI transparency tags should be applied. The company did not specify an exact timeline for when the new labels would become visible to listeners on the service.

The move reflects broader industry efforts to address the surge in AI-generated music over the past several years. Competing streaming services have implemented their own systems: Spotify labels profiles of apparent AI-generated artists as “AI Personas,” while Tidal labels AI music and excludes such tracks from royalty calculations. Industry groups including the RIAA, IFPI, the Grammys, and SAG-AFTRA announced a collaborative labeling initiative the previous month to indicate whether songs were produced using AI.

Apple Music executive Oliver Schusser indicated earlier this year that more than one-third of tracks uploaded to the platform were entirely AI-generated. While the company maintains internal detection software to analyze how AI was used and identify the models responsible, Schusser emphasized that those uploading content bear responsibility for properly disclosing their use of artificial intelligence technology in music creation.
