The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, a all-marble venue constructed for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, has begun an extensive restoration project that includes its first comprehensive cleaning in over a hundred years. The stadium, widely known by its Greek nickname “Kallimammaro” meaning beautiful marble, is made from the same high-quality marble found on the Acropolis, requiring careful conservation methods during the cleaning process.
Workers in protective overalls are using low-pressure water sprays and steam cleaning to remove accumulated dirt, organic materials, and stains from the stadium’s 47 tiers. Stadium officials indicate that chewing gum, high heels, and soft-drink residue are primary sources of discoloration on the marble surfaces. Senior conservator Dimitris Selemis emphasized that the objective is not merely to whiten the structure but to eliminate accumulated debris and organic matter while preserving the original marble quality. Steam treatment is being applied to remove blackened chewing gum stains, and vacuums collect runoff water as cleaning progresses.
Beyond the cleaning initiative, the stadium is receiving additional upgrades including a new track, enhanced lighting systems, and renovated support facilities. The privately funded project, backed by a shipping company and managed by the Hellenic Olympic Committee in consultation with Culture Ministry specialists, is scheduled to continue through 2026. Current work is concentrated on the stadium’s curved end section, with completion targeted for Sept. 10 to prepare for the torch-passing ceremony for the Dakar Youth Olympics.
Historically, the stadium has hosted numerous events since its reconstruction, ranging from fashion shows and rock concerts to boxing matches and national celebrations. Built into a natural ravine at a site used for ancient Greek athletic contests and Roman spectacles, the venue serves as the ceremonial departure point for the Olympic flame and will fulfill that role for Los Angeles 2028. IOC President Kirsty Coventry is expected to attend the September ceremony.
