Following Thayer’s death, his wife Vicki and son Isidore organized a comprehensive exhibition of his works, featuring detailed sculptural pieces with explorable digestive tracts, decorative appendages, and removable eyeballs. The exhibition was hosted at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world’s busiest airport by passenger volume, exposing the artist’s singular vision to millions of travelers between December 2023 and April 2024.
According to Anne-Laure Berteau, founder of Because the Night Productions, the filmmaking process served as a therapeutic outlet for the family members involved. “Shooting and editing become ways of rewriting their lives – of transforming sorrow into a story that transcends reality,” Berteau explained, describing cinema as a connective force between the living and the departed.
Liaison Pictures, founded in 2023 by John Henry Hinkel and Andrew Ostapchenko, operates as a production and finance entity focused on supporting auteur-driven projects across multiple genres. Hinkel’s connection to the Bethel family runs deep; he and Isidore Bethel were high school and Harvard classmates. Hinkel relocated to his hometown of Atlanta to establish the company and noted that the project reflects his vision for expanding the types of films produced in the region.
The production team is seeking potential partners for production, distribution, and worldwide sales representation through the Match Me! platform at the Locarno festival.
