Autlook Filmsales has secured international distribution rights to “Union Town,” a documentary by two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple. The film is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in the Venice Open section, with a subsequent North American premiere planned for the Toronto International Film Festival.
The documentary examines the experiences of essential workers in New York City’s last-mile delivery sector during a period of renewed labor organizing activity in the city. The work draws connections across delivery operations at major companies including UPS and Amazon, as well as the predominantly immigrant workforce employed through app-based bike delivery services. Shot over a three-year period, the film explores contemporary labor movements and the concept of solidarity among workers with varying degrees of institutional power.
In addition to the new documentary, Autlook acquired distribution rights to two of Kopple’s earlier Oscar-winning works: “Harlan County USA” from 1976 and “American Dream” from 1990. These acquisitions exclude North American, Australian, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and Irish territories. Both films were previously restored in 4K by Janus Films and received theatrical re-release across the United States.
Stephanie Fuchs, chief executive of Autlook Filmsales, characterized Kopple’s career as dedicated to amplifying worker perspectives in documentary form and noted the significance of representing all three films together. The documentary is produced by Kopple alongside Hannes Hosp and Peter Palandjian, with Palandjian and Glenn Rigberg credited as executive producers.
