Berkshire earnings rose last quarter and CEO Greg Abel is starting to deploy Buffett's massive cash hoard

Berkshire Hathaway reported operating earnings of $12.98 billion for the second quarter, up 16% from $11.16 billion in the prior year period. The increase was driven by strength in multiple segments, with manufacturing, service and retailing earnings jumping 24% to $4.47 billion and Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s profit surging 27% to $891 million. The railroad division BNSF posted a 6% increase to $1.56 billion in earnings.

Insurance operations represented a challenging area, with underwriting earnings declining 13% to $1.73 billion from $1.99 billion a year earlier. Insurance investment income also fell 9% to $3.06 billion. Despite the weakness in this segment, overall operating performance remained positive across the conglomerate.

Under newly appointed CEO Greg Abel, who assumed the role at the beginning of the year, Berkshire initiated a more active capital deployment strategy. The company repurchased approximately $4.5 billion of its own shares during the quarter, marking a significant acceleration from the $235 million in buybacks during the first quarter. The cash pile declined to $365.5 billion at the end of June from $397.4 billion three months prior, reflecting capital deployment through various investments including the closing of the Taylor Morrison acquisition.

Berkshire reversed a pattern of stock sales that had persisted for 14 consecutive quarters, becoming a net buyer of equities with nearly $20 billion in net purchases during the period. The filing revealed that Alphabet had entered the company’s five largest equity holdings by market value at the end of June, joining longtime holdings American Express, Apple, Bank of America and Coca-Cola. Year-to-date, Berkshire shares were up 3%, trailing the S&P 500’s 13% gain, though the stock had risen 9% over the preceding three months.
