Range expansions occurred across all continents with particular concentration in tropical regions, while contractions were predominantly observed in Europe and North America. Elevation shifts were almost exclusively documented in the northern hemisphere.

Beyond climate factors, additional drivers of change include habitat loss and agricultural practices. The cranberry fritillary in Germany has lost significant original habitat due to bog drainage, while agricultural intensification in Romania has driven contraction in the Danube clouded yellow butterfly population. In Brazil, warming conditions have enabled the blue butterfly Godartiana byses to expand from Rio de Janeiro and Bahia states into São Paulo. Some species experienced simultaneous expansion in certain regions and contraction in others, creating uncertainty about long-term conservation outcomes.

Researchers emphasize the urgency of coordinated global monitoring systems, particularly in tropical regions, to track species movements and inform targeted conservation strategies. In a contrasting example of successful intervention, the Eltham copper butterfly in Melbourne, once thought extinct before its rediscovery in 1986, has demonstrated recovery through community-led habitat restoration efforts, with recent ecological surveys recording nearly a five-fold increase in larvae numbers on native plants.
