Peter Caravan, who spent two decades at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital conducting biopharmaceutical research, is relocating to the University of British Columbia. Stephanie Burt, an English professor at Harvard, described the funding cuts as harmful to the scientific community and indicated that Canada offered a more supportive environment.
Canada’s Industry Minister stated the government welcomed the incoming researchers. Some participants were born in the US but are seeking opportunities elsewhere, while others are Canadian-born researchers returning home after working abroad. Academic observers have noted that funding uncertainties and what some characterize as politicization of research support mechanisms have made international opportunities increasingly attractive to American scientists.
